Baby Sock Pattern

Yesterday I had some free time and made a stop at one of the last knitting stores in St. Louis that I had not yet been to, Kirkwood Knittery. They happened to be having a sale, woohoo, buy three balls and get one free. I ended up not buying too much, but I did pick up one ball of RY Cashcotton DK in green apple, one ball of RY Cashsoft Aran in a slate grey color, and one ball of unknown bright green microfibre blend and an unknown ball of orange Egyptian Cotton. The last two balls were only a buck a piece!!! The Cashcotton is the most luxurious feeling yarn, it's going to be perfect for this little baby boy on the way, and so I knit some sockies for him, and I've decided to post my pattern.

Maybe this pattern is out there somewhere, but after knitting lots and lots of baby/kids socks you kind of get an idea of what needs to be done in order to create a sock. I took what I liked from certain patterns and made my own. A friend of mine, Lacey that's you, is a big fan of knitting baby things so I wanted to make sure that I posted this for you!

Baby Socks for 0-6m

Like I said, I took what I liked from different sock patterns to make what I think are going to be a great pair of baby socks. I kept the ribbing onto the foot of the sock because I think that will keep these socks on a constantly moving babies foot for just a little bit longer. I also choose to do something in a needle size slightly larger that what I had been knitting baby socks with (#1 and #2's), this way if you are a beginner they really knit very quickly, but aren't quite as clumsy looking as something knit on bigger needles. And for those of you fluent in sock, I tried to be very explanatory in my instructions for those who may be knitting these as their first sock pattern. Lastly, just a personal suggestion, splurge on a really nice yarn for babies feet. I know, I know that these will hardly be worn, but that seems to add to the magic of knitting for baby, plus you won't need the whole ball, and maybe could even get a hat out of it too.

The most simple way to make these socks larger, would be to just go up a needle size or so, and then work even on the foot until you are about 3/4" from where you need your sock to stop, then begin your toe shaping.

Materials:
-One set (4) of #4 double pointed needles (very short ones work really well)
-One ball of DK weight yarn (I used the Cashcotton, and really one ball of this would make at least 3 pairs, so you don't need much)

Directions:
-C/O 24 stitches and divide between 3 needles, join (being careful not to twist) and work in a 2x2 ribbing for 20 rows. If you need, place a marker so you remember which needle you started with
Heel
-Knit 12 sts (these are for your heel) onto one needle slipping the first stitch of the row
-Continue on these 12 stitches in the stockinette stitch, slipping the first stitch of each row, for 11 more rows (the slipped stitches will create selvage stitches on the edge of the heel that you will pick up later.
Turning the Heel
-Row 1 (RS): K9, k2tog, turn
-Row 2 (WS): P7, p2tog, turn
-Row 3: K to one stitch before gap, k2tog
-Row 4: P to one stitch before gap, p2tog
-Repeat last 2 rows until 6 stitches left
-Purl one row
-With right side facing, pick up and knit 6 stitches on edge of heel (this will be needles one)
-With needle two, continue in the 2x2 ribbing across the held stitches
-With needle three, pick up and knit 6 stitches on the other edge of heel, then knit 3 stitches onto needle 3 off of needle one.
Foot
-Remember that you will continue in the 2x2 rib on the 12 stitches that were held while working the heel.
-Row 1: Beginning with needle one, k to last 3 stitches on needle, k2tog, k1, k in ribbing across needle 2, on needle three k1, ssk, k to end of needle
-Row 2: Work even on all stitches
-Repeat last two rows until you have 6 stitches left on needles one and three.
-Work even on foot until it measures 2 1/2" from heel
Toe
-Row 1: Needle one: k to last 3 sts on needle, kstog, k1, Needle 2: k1, ssk, k (discontinue ribbing) to last 3 stitches k2tog, k1, Needle 3: k1, ssk, k to end
-Row 2: Work even, knitting all stitches on each needle
-Repeat last two rows once more
-Repeat Row 1 until 8 stitches are left total
-Knit the remaining 2 sts on needle one onto needle three
-With tapestry needle kitchner stitch toe stitches together

Voila! Perfect baby socks!

Hi, I just found this pattern on Ravelry.com and made a pair in DB Cashmerino dk yarn :) Great pattern, but I did find an error in the turning heel. I figured it out to be:

row 1 (RS): K8, k2tog, turn
row 2 (WS): P5, p2tog, turn
then after you get to 6 sts, you knit one more row, not purl, because you are already on the RS.

Your pattern lives on. I needed one knit with dk to go with a romper I knit. Thanks!

Awesome! Thank you... I've modified a bit to suit an older baby, and they came out great!

When you write, regarding the heel, repeat until you have six stitches left on needle one and needle three, do you mean a combined six for both needles, or 12 stitches total on needles one and three?
